My paternal grandmothers maiden name was Ager and I have traced this line of the family back as far as Thomas Ager who was born in North Crawley, Buckinghamshire in 1811. He married a lady called Mary Robinson and they lived and brought up their four children in North Crawley.

The children of Thomas and Mary Ager were Samuel (1838), Harriet (1843), John (1848) and Leah (1853).

Samuel Ager who was born in North Crawley on 17 May 1838, married Ann Richardson on 24 May 1858 and they also lived and brought up their children in the village of North Crawley, Bucks.

The children of Sam and Ann Ager were Eva (1858), Eliza (1860), Sarah (1863), George (1865) Elizabeth (1866), Joseph (1868), James (1870), Samuel (1872), Harriet Leah (1874), Jane (1876), Mary (1877) and John Charles (1879).

John Charles Ager was my great-grandfather and was born in North Crawley on 28 March 1879 (Birth Certificate). He married Dinah Kitty Miller of Hanslope, Bucks in Haversham, Bucks on St. Valentines Day 1903.

The name Ager or the variation Agar, apparently developed from he names Algar or Elgar which Originally came from Aelfgar, Prince of Mercia in the 7th century. How true this is, I couldn't be sure...!

North Crawley - is a Bucks village which lies to the north-east of the county close to the Bedfordshire border. Crawley is an old English word for 'crow-clearing'.

The parish church is called St. Firmin who was the first bishop of Amiens, martyred in AD 287. An ancient monastery used to stand here the time of the Doomesday survey but it had already gone by the time of dissolution of the monasteries.

There are only two churches in England who are dedicated to this particular Saint.
