Surnames..

A surname is a hereditary family name borne by all members of a family descending through the male line.

Hereditary surnames were first introduced to England by followers of William the Conqueror and were derived from the place-names of their Estates. By the middle of the 14th Century most of the population of England had a hereditary surname.

Most surnames are derived from one of the following:
1. Place-names
e.g De Montford
2. Location of abode e.g Wood
3. Occupations
e.g Carter
4. Nicknames
e.g Short
5. Relationship - derived from a relative, usually the father
e.g Richardson.
