Tour of
Stony
Stratford
|
Most of my ancestors come from the villages along the borders of North Buckinghamshire
with Northamptonshire and Oxfordshire, although my Goodman line originate in Bedfordshire.

|
The map to the side shows the position of these four counties within England.
The darkest coloured county in the centre is Buckinghamshire. Northamptonshire
sits directly north of Bucks with Oxon lying to the west (left) and Bedfordshire
to the east (right). |
The following is a list of the main villages in which my ancestors lived and where much of my research centres:
Buckinghamshire
Beachampton Bradwell Forsters Booth Gawcott Hanslope Hartwell Haversham Nash New Bradwell Newport Pagnell North Crawley Stony Stratford Thornborough Thornton Whaddon Wicken |
Northamptonshire

The town of Stony Stratford is famous for the original
'Cock & Bull Story'.
In the 16th & 17th centuries, it became a busy stopping point for coaches
travelling between London and the North.
Travellers were the source of news from other parts of the country and two of
the busy coaching inns, The Cock and The Bull struck up a rivalry to see who
could obtain the most outrageous tales first (perhaps
making a little up along the way?)
To this day, a strange or unbelievable story is a Cock & Bull Story.
